Larry was elected to Séanad Éireann on the 27th July, 2007 through the Industrial and Commercial Panel. Later, He was appointed spokesperson for Drugs Strategy and Community Affairs, Housing and Urban Renewal. He also has a great interest in the Economy, Older persons and the disadvantaged. He is married to Kathleen (McNicholas, from Swinford Co.Mayo) and has four children.

Larry previously served on Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council for over 16 years representing the Ballybrack (1999 - 2007) and Glencullen (1991 - 1999) Local Electoral Area's (LEA's).

Larry was elected first in 1991, and then again in 1999 and 2004 serving 17 years in total. and was elected as Cathaoirleach during 1999/2000; he also became leader of the Fianna Fail group on the council, and served on many committees including vice chairman of the old Eastern Health Board and chairman of the steering committee of Loughlinstown Hospital Development Board.

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council came into being in 1994, when the greater Dublin area was split into three councils. Councillors and council management worked together during these years to use this improvement in the finances of the council to deal with the lesser but important parts of our infrastructure such as foot paths, public lighting, tree management etc. "Larry has served with councillors and deputies of all parties. He said "It has been an honour to serve alongside people such as these who unselfishly give their time and energy in making our communities better places to live. I also thank the employment, education, Gardai, neighbourhood watch, carers, ambulance, fire and health service personnel who continue to provide us with excellent service".

"It has also been my privilege to work alongside the very many volunteer groups and residents associations, who constantly strive to make their environments better places. It is astonishing to see what can be achieved when people come together and form associations with a common bond and vision."

Larry still gives his time and energy to many committee and associations.
